DIGITAL TRANSFORMATION AND GREEN RETAIL – ESSENTIAL STRATEGIES FOR BUSINESS SURVIVAL

To adapt to the evolving market landscape, retail businesses must accelerate digital transformation, invest in modern trade infrastructure, and enhance customer experience. Chairwoman Lan stated, “Shifts in consumer behavior are inevitable. Businesses that fail to innovate will be left behind.”

Retailers are urged to adopt advanced technologies, including:

  • Omnichannel retail systems to optimize customer journeys;
  • Artificial intelligence (AI) for demand forecasting, inventory optimization, and personalized promotions;
  • Big Data analytics for deeper insights into consumer behavior and dynamic pricing strategies.

At the same time, the phygital retail model—integrating physical stores with digital platforms—has emerged as a competitive advantage, enabling consumers to test products offline while ordering online. Personalized services, optimized space design, and interactive experiences are expected to become key differentiators.

Upgrading logistics, particularly cold chain infrastructure, is essential in supporting the rise of fresh food consumption, instant shopping, and same-day delivery. “Modern retail cannot exist without strong logistics,” Lan affirmed.

Green retail and circular economy practices are also becoming central to business strategy, aligned with Vietnam’s National Green Growth Strategy. Reducing single-use plastics, optimizing packaging, prioritizing environmentally responsible suppliers, and implementing product-takeback programs not only contribute to sustainability but also reinforce brand equity.

THE STATE’S ROLE IN SHAPING THE NEXT DEVELOPMENT PHASE

Representatives from the Ministry of Industry and Trade outlined four key strategic directions for the comprehensive development of the domestic market:

  1. Developing modern and green trade infrastructure and logistics:
    • Upgrading traditional markets toward modernity while preserving cultural values;
    • Implementing “smart market” models to support the distribution of Vietnamese goods in rural areas.
  2. Improving the legal framework for e-commerce:
    • Accelerating revisions to the E-commerce Law;
    • Building a national e-commerce platform integrating payment, logistics, and traceability through blockchain, QR codes, and RFID.
  3. Promoting innovation and digital transformation in commerce:
    • Supporting enterprises to adopt digital governance;
    • Fostering an ecosystem for business digitalization.
  4. Enhancing institutions and improving the business environment:
    • Increasing transparency in retail market management;
    • Reducing administrative barriers for enterprises.

Chairwoman Lan further recommended that the Government create targeted policies to support trade infrastructure development in remote and mountainous areas; attract FDI into modern retail distribution networks; and incentivize investment in logistics, transportation, cold storage, and digital payment services.

The forum concluded with a shared vision: Vietnam’s domestic trade is entering a decisive transition period. By leveraging domestic demand, embracing digital innovation, modernizing infrastructure, and strengthening institutional frameworks, Vietnam can build a resilient and competitive domestic market aligned with global sustainable development trends.
